More than 200 people, including more than 20 schoolchildren, were killed on Tuesday in an earthquake in Mexico.

Many buildings collapsed in the country's capital, Mexico City.

Less than two weeks ago, a devastating earthquake struck southern Mexico.

The quake marked the anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that flattened many parts of Mexico City and killed at least 9,500 people.

The Mexican National Seismological Service recorded a magnitude of 7.1.

In the south of Mexico City, four floors of the Enrique Rebsamen school collapsed, trapping children.

The school has found the bodies of 22 children and two adults, about 30 children and eight adults believed to be still trapped.

Government officials say some buildings caught fire, and they urged residents not to smoke in the streets, fearing that a gas leak could cause an explosion.

The quake struck at 1.14pm local time on Tuesday, near the town of Axochiapan in the state of morelos, according to the national seismological bureau of Mexico.

The earthquake center measured by the US Geological Survey is located in the town of Raboso in Puebla, which has a depth of 51 kilometers.
